12th & 13th February 2011, 10.30am-4.30pm Hosted by the Colchester Waits and Colchester Historical Dance. Our tutors were Cait Webb and Chris Elmes from the group Gaita, who are specialists in Medieval music, dance and performance practice. They have published several CDs as well as books of music and dance steps from the 12th-15th Centuries. They are particularly enthusiastic about the connections betweenmelody and dance and the way in which a knowledge of both can enhance the performance of either.
The Saturday morning was dedicated to learning about the dance types and steps of the period and to looking at some original source material. On Saturday afternoon musicians worked with Chris on purely musical matters while the dancers worked with Cait on their dance steps and style. Then on Sunday we put everything together.
