Marlborough Waits

Samuel Pepys referred to the Marlborough Waits in his diary.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys: Companion, Robert Latham, William Matthews, 1983.
“His gusto was extraordinary; he loved to see others take pleasure in music, he could enjoy the ‘innocence’ of the Marlborough waits…”

On 14 July 2012, journalist Gerald Isaaman covered a story about Jazz for the Marlborough News when Ellington’s six-movement Queen’s Suite was performed in Marlborough- to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee. The band performing this work – ‘Echoes of Ellington’ – consisted of 16 musicians and was directed by the clarinettist Pete Long.
On this occassion, the Mayor presented Pete Long and the band with Marlborough Waits badges. The concert was sponsored by solicitors Awdry, Bailey and Douglas.
