LANCASTER WAITS
“Time-Honoured Lancaster”, C. Fleury, 1891
From Alan Radford, 4th February 2020.
“The Lancaster Borough Waits, established in 1856 [?], deserve mention.
Their notices bear upon them the arms of the borough, with the words in Roman capitals,
‘By your kind permission’ [Venia Tua],
and then follows the couplet –
Underneath my window where the snow lies white,
I can hear sweet music playing in the night.
At the foot are thw words – flute, violin, concertina, violoncello.”
